Who were the Arditi? In what historical context were they created and what were their tasks? Were they so crucial during the two world wars? And again, can one die at the age of twenty-five mowed down by a barrage of machine gun after the war has ended? Could the Battle of Monte Casale have been avoided? And how? The author tries to answer these and other questions by taking inspiration from the heroic sacrifice of his uncle Erigo Benedetti, an Ardito who died in battle on the afternoon of 30 April 1945 and decorated with the Silver Medal for Military Valor to the Memory. His uncle died in the battle of Monte Casale and had the time, before expiring, to launch a last loud cry: "Long live Italy".
